Tears, tantrums and Sausage rolls!


I picked up a couple of packs of Jus-rol puff pastry sheets on offer and we decided to make some sausage rolls with them.

Whilst The Brilliant Chef is a dab hand at making sausage rolls, Miss T hasn't made them before so I thought it would be nice for her to have a go. 

We popped to our local butcher and picked up a couple of packs of sausage meat then we were all set. 

We used D's video recipe (which can be found here) as a guide but we were making a larger quantity so here's the recipe. I still can't believe he was just 6 years old in that video - I feel so proud of him!

Ingredients: 
1200g sausagemeat (these turned out quite meaty so I reckon 800-900g sausagemeat would be plenty.)
2 packs of jus rol puff pastry sheets (each pack is 320g so 640g altogether)
3-4 tablespoons of water
Black pepper to taste
1 egg

Method
1. Pre-heat the oven to 200C. 
2. In a bowl mix the water, sausagemeat and pepper together. The water is supposed to help the pastry puff up better.
3.  Leave the puff pastry at room temerature for 20-30 minutes before you start. Unroll each sheet and cut each of the puff pastry sheets in half lengthways. 
4. Then place a strip of sausagemeat to go the whole length of each of the four pieces of puff pastry. Leave a gap along the edges.

5. Lightly beat an egg and using a pastry brush, brush some egg along the length edges of the pastry. Fold the pastry onto itself (with the sausagemeat remaining in the centre) and push to form a seal along the edge. 
6. Use a knife to cut a few slits along the length of edge of the giant sausage rolls you've created. Then cut them into more manageable sized pieces (either mini or regular length sausage rolls).

7. Brush the top of your sausage rolls with the remaining egg yolk, place on a baking tray lined with baking paper, and pop into the pre-heated oven for 25 minutes at 200C.

Then whilst they are cooking, play your homemade drum, then throw a tantrum or two because you haven't had a nap and feel exhausted.
Sausage rolls are ready...


After you've eaten your sausage rolls alfresco for lunch, it's given you enough energy for a splash in the pool. Nap time is overrated anyway! 

Oh, I nearly forgot, we also have a top tip from Miss T today: Never eat raw sausagemeat because it tastes yuck and might make you very ill (thankfully she didn't get ill but I hope she has learnt not to eat raw meat again!).

  1. awww bless, I have to admit I often have tantrums in the kitchen too. Maybe I should try a paddling pool to cool down in. The sausage rolls do look yummy though and I'm glad she didn't get sick from eating raw sausage meat.

    1. thankfully she only put the tiniest bit in her mouth and after seeing my reaction i don't think she will eat raw meat again! She loved splashing in the paddling pool. x

  3. I regularly have tears and tantrums when baking - and you know I'm not talking about Max ;)
    The sausage rolls look yummy! May try this one day with my boy, we've very nearly mastered cupcakes!! x
